I have been in and out of different colleges trying to see what to do. I want to be able to build, maintain and troubleshoot computers, but I am a little confused in which direction I should go. Into the Information Technology side or the engineering side to become a technician.

If you want to become a computer technician, all you need is a CompTIA A+ Certification. Get some books on A+ certification, study hard, register and pay for the exam on Prometric.com or Vue.com, select your venue. Attend the exam, pass the test, and you’ll be qualified.

Experience is also important. Visit IT forums and websites and see how people troubleshoot problems. Learn to use Microsoft’s Virtual Pc or Vmware Workstation.

Getting an IT degree sets you on track to become a programmer, developer, administrator.

Is that the same kind of degree? I know learning technology and educational technology is the same thing.

I know information technology is different from information systems.

But, is educational technology the same thing as information technology?

Not at all. While educational technologists may use information technology in their jobs, they have a very different purpose. I’ve worked at a couple of universities which used educational technologists heavily, and their job was to work with instructors to help them design and implement ways of teaching effectively. Yes, they taught the faculty about new hardware and software developments that they might be able to use to make their classes more effective (I remember when podcasting first became available, they helped some instructors use that to record their lectures), but they also help faculty design projects to assign to their students, or write exams to optimally test for how well students have met class objectives, etc. I also remember at one point going to our instructional technologist because I was teaching a lot of student athletes, and I noticed that they had a lot of kinetic energy and found it hard to sit still in class, even if they were interested. So we designed some class exercises which would allow students to move around more often so that I could keep their attention.

I’m in grade 12 and I want to know what education I need to get into an IT career.

I live in Toronto, Canada and there are only 2 Universities (outside the city) that offer a Bachelor of Information Technology.

There are three colleges in my area that offer diplomas for Systems Technology, Systems Technician, Information Systems Business Analyst, and Networking.

Is it better to get a diploma from college or a degree to get started in information technology?
Is there any other way of starting an IT career?

get certifications first… then worry about getting a degree… seriously a well certified guy is almost always better and more valuable then a guy with a diploma… what part of IT do you want to get into? it really is a broad field.
start by studying for a+ then decide if you want to do windows admin network admin DBA (oracle sql etc) or development or whatever… there are certs for all of these paths… just go down the path and you will do ok…

Hi! My name is Karl and I am planning to take up Information Technology in college because I really am fond of computers and the internet. I just want to know the following:

1. What is Information Technology all about?
2. What are the possible jobs that I can have after I finished studying Information Technology?

Thanks for answering!

1) Information in the narrow sense is about the use of computers to accomplish tasks and the associated maintenance of said systems.

2) Well, the use of computers is prevalent everywhere now, so the most important part of getting jobs working with computers these days are not general skills, but coupling knowledge of computers with specific knowledge other subject matter. Everyone has to specialize to some degree, so pick another subject you find interesting to tie in :)

In broad measure, the IT world falls into the category of people who administer systems, and people who program (although that line is blurry).

Hi! I am doing a report on information technology and my assigned report is about how IT plays an important role in a success of a business.Do you have some ideas or advice for me. Thanks a lot!

without technology there wouldn’t be very much of an economy. technology helps business people track finance track shipments that they make. so overall there would be chaos in marketing because we need that technology.

hope i helped
